Listen: Monophona - "Black On Black" [Premiere]
Darkness is intriguing; in fact, more so the darker we go, to the point where the darkness looks both like infinity and absolute nothingness. Everything and nothing at the same time, Luxembourgian trio Monophona tread that edge with precision.
Indeed, their name alone, alluding to a single uniform sound, is both fitting and paradoxical - they are far from a monogenre act, blending together trip-hop, industrial beats and deep in the woods vocals, yet their name is a testament to their uncanny knack of weaving these into a seamless whole.
The first single from their upcoming album of the same name, “Black On Black” propels along on deep, throbbing synth beats courtesy of producer Chook, juxtaposed by vocalist Claudine Muno’s otherworldly vocals. Muno, a folk singer by trade, employs multiple inflections, making it literally sound as if two different vocalists are present, injecting the cold, dark atmosphere with some much needed blood.
Muno inquires, “will you be afraid of the dread…afraid of the dark?” Of course we will, but it calls us and we can’t help but venture in.
She says of the track: "'Black On Black'' is a song about depression and about how you can find yourself suffering from it even when there seems to be nothing wrong with your life. It feels as if you are in darkness and inside that darkness you can sense a threat that no one else can identify. It becomes unbearable because you cannot fight against something you can't see. I always felt as if music or writing or art in general could provide a shelter from this feeling, but sometimes it's simply not enough."
“Black On Black” (AA single with "Ribbons") drops on 10 October and is to be followed by “Thumbs” later this year. The trio's album proper is released in January 2015. Check out tour dates below:
