Southern rapper sosocamo blends the ethereal and the brash in “Chronic”

Many artists are eager to leave their past behind, flocking to the angelic glow of city lights as soon as they are able. Rapper sosocamo, on the other hand, finds power in his upbringing.

Across the songs of his debut album no service, he pays homage to the joys of the Southern lifestyle, and frames those hooks with irresistibly melodic flows. In the lead track “Chronic”, sosocamo meshes dauntless bars with feather-light embellishments to create a surprisingly alluring fusion of sounds. A sparkling piano line blends effortlessly into a booming drum and bass, and the contrasting colors set a balanced foundation for the song. The rapper spits flames across the rest of the layered soundscape: a rotating cast of electronic hits across the spectrum of ethereal and brash.

With its smooth melodies and tenacious hooks, “Chronic” points to the reasons behind sosocamo’s growing fan base. The rapper might still be in the underground, but he’s bursting out from it with his unabashed individuality and melodic flows.

The 13-track collection no service, named after his signal-less hometown in rural North Carolina, explores the fine lines between ambition and loneliness, and how to stand firm against the pressures of tradition. This is sosocamo flexing his muscles. Produced with the help of collaborator Grayto, plus others like Rio Leyva (Gucci Mane) and Synthetic (Yeat, Lil Uzi Vert) the album brings clean production to sosocamo’s infectious cadence. While other rappers might feel drawn to the city to make it big, sosocamo proves you can do it all in your own backyard — if you’re committed to this kind of individuality, that is.
