Fabrizio Cammarata offers a sacred soundscape in “Asanta”
Sicilian singer-songwriter Fabrizio Cammarata returns with “Asanta,” a powerful opening statement from his forthcoming concept album Insularities. True to his deeply evocative style, the track is equal parts spiritual meditation and song.
“Asanta” was conceived whilst Cammarata was alone in the sun-scorched golden hills of Sicily, when suddenly a chant entered his mind and he recorded it as a voice memo. It was that chant that set the foundations for what the song is today, with the artist sharing, “It was pure voice, instinct, intuition. I started singing the chant again, and there — with no instruments or support — ‘Asanta’ was born.”
Opening in Sicilian before shifting into English, the track feels like a conversation between past and present. One side is deeply rooted, and the other is searching for something more. This push and pull is very human and instantly relatable. Sonically, “Asanta” is beautifully atmospheric, with an almost haunting quality. The genre-blurring track features an intoxicating amalgam of rippling electronic sounds, Mediterranean soul and organic folk.
Evoking a cinematic feel, Cammarata confides, “My songwriting is deeply visual — I always see moving images as I write.” For this particular release, the musician was envisioning a specific scene, transported to a time when his mother was a child and watched a saint’s procession in the 1950s on the streets of Sicily. We can hear that vision in the music itself, with “Asanta” delivering a solemn and reverent sound, carrying the weight of something almost sacred.
Despite the layers of sounds and textures in “Asanta,” the song still feels stripped back. It’s honest, vulnerable and unguarded, resulting in a listening experience that’s both mesmerizing and impossible to turn away from.
With the upcoming album Insularities set to explore the emotional terrain of island life, both literal and metaphorical, “Asanta” gives us a taste of what to expect, pointing toward a journey that’s both deeply personal yet universally resonant.
