Man/Woman/Chainsaw's SON Estrella Galicia show at the Sebright Arms packs in the fans
Following a stacked year of events featuring artists such as Panic Shack, Swim Deep, and Coach Party and a sold-out Dot to Dot warm up show headlined by Big Special last month, SON Estrella Galicia's live show series continues with a debut at a new venue to host one of London’s consistently most exciting live acts: Man/Woman/Chainsaw.
Over the past couple of years, SON Estrella Galicia has sought to shake up what a live music experience can be by integrating Spanish nightlife with UK gig culture. Past events have included sustainability workshops and immersive beer tastings across staple venues from Hackney’s Paper Dress Vintage, all the way down to Brighton’s The Prince Albert.
This time around, they’re taking a no-frills approach to an inaugural show at East London’s Sebright Arms, headlined by the buzzy London five-piece with support from Brighton newcomers AtticOmatic. In the absence of the brand’s trademark interactive activities, nothing was lost. Rather, the focus was on the music – bringing exceptional talent to a beloved community space – at a time where independent music venues need the community the most. And as one would expect, it’s also what the community needed as it was yet another sold-out show.

Between bottles of Estrella Galicia lager and slices of Alby’s pizza, chatter rises and falls within the loft of the Sebright, ultimately disseminating when AtticOmatic took the stage downstairs. Having just released their debut EP Fold The World in May, the five-piece are fresh-faced as they reel through a stirring medley of post-rock, dream-pop and jazz compositions. Their experimental instrumental arrangements teamed with the spry positioning of Kamran Kaur’s vocals unravel into something purely mesmeric, all the way through to their reticent yet confrontationally flourished closer "Wait".
Fresh off the festival circuit, Man/Woman/Chainsaw boast a presence that compels the room to fill out despite the evening heat that’s thick within the space. Since releasing their debut EP Eazy Peazy back in November, the quintet have remained unshakeable as they maintain their spot as a must-see act. The packed-out underground of the Sebright Arms would serve as excellent evidence for their status as the band launched into "The Boss’" a sucker-punch introduction of hurried riffs and anthemically boisterous lyrical delivery.

When they followed with the gentler swing of "Adam & Steve", their first single release of the year, their signature was established: a vibrant equilibrium of balladry and spirited, propulsive melodies which place them well ahead of the curve. Not wasting any time, the group allowed the music to speak for them – primarily pausing to issue a thank you to SON Estrella Galicia for having them.
The jaunt through their EP tracks was fleshed out with new material; when the drastic mood shift of "MadDog" tore through the crowd, the steady, delicate piano-led tenderness of "Grow A Tongue In Time" was prepared to soothe. Vera Leppänen’s vocals changed a captivating pace from feathery to controlled and searing in quick time, a dynamic trade-off with Billy Ward’s lower range. The summation of their neverending appeal was highlighted with grandiose orchestral closer "Ode To Clio", a high-powered highlight.

For anyone who wasn’t quite ready to go home, London post-punk collective Warmduscher held down the rest of the night with a DJ set. In bringing people together by offering a platform for new artists and a return home for those who have established themselves through the DIY community, the momentous evening felt like a true representation of the philosophy that SON Estrella Galicia stands by.
