Visions Festival to present new Arthur Russell showcase at London's Oval Space

19 May 2015, 12:17 | Written by Laurence Day

Visions Festival has announced a new showcase of Arthur Russell music, performed by a range of collaborators, led by Peter Gordon.

Gordon, an award-winning composer for various media will perform his "new reading [of Russell's] instrumentals".

A blurb for the event explains the premise:

"Peter Gordon and Arthur Russell met each other by chance in New York City in 1975. They quickly bonded over their shared love of instrumental pop music, becoming close friends and regular collaborators. As well as playing keyboards in the original ensemble, Peter Gordon also worked closely with Russell on the arrangement and notation of instrumentals. Consequently, many parts of the original score are in Gordon’s handwriting.

Peter Gordon has gone on to become an award winning composer for opera, theatre and film. In March 2012, almost twenty years after Arthur Russell’s death, Peter Gordon unveiled his new reading of instrumentals at a sold-out performance in New York City’s renowned arts centre.

Visions is proud to bring this unique performance to hackney’s oval space on august 10th. It will feature several members of Russell’s original ensemble original and photographs by Yuko Nonomura, projected during the 1975/78 performances."

The performance will take place at London's Oval Space on 10 August as part of Visions Festival, although it is ticketed separately. You can grab tickets from here. More information about Visions can be found here.

A new Arthur Russell album, named Corn, is set to be released 9 June via Audika; for more information, head here.

There's a similar event taking place this Sunday, with original venue Cafe Oto selling out in seconds (it was later upgraded to the Islington Town Hall).
