David Bowie memorial concert planned for New York City

A David Bowie memorial concert is set to take place in New York City in March.

Bowie sadly passed away following an 18-month battle with cancer on 10 January.

The memorial concert will be held at NYC's Carnegie Hall on 31 March.

Titled 'The Music Of David Bowie' the original show - planned prior to his death - was set to be a tribute to his works, but organisers have now altered the focus following yesterday's news.

Cyndi Lauper, The Roots, The Mountain Goats, and longtime Bowie producer Tony Visconti are among the acts confirmed to appear.

Tickets for the show went on sale yesterday - as had been planned in advance - and have already, unsurprisingly, sold out.

An official statement from the show's organisers reads: "The unexpected death of David Bowie has turned this tribute, which we have worked on for the past seven months, into a memorial concert. While the series has featured surprise appearances and performances of honorees several times in the past, this year's concert will certainly be remembered as a poignant celebration of his music by his friends, peers, and fans. We are all deeply saddened by this news. The timing of our public on-sale date is bizarre in its timing and the show is taking on many more emotions. RIP David and may God's love be with you..."

Upon the announcement that Bowie had passed away, tributesflooded in from across the planet, from close collaborators such as The Rolling Stones and Nile Rodgers, to international agencies such as the German Foreign Office, who claimed that Bowie helped "bring down the wall". Rough Trade announced that they would be donating all profits from sales of Bowie records to Cancer Research UK this month; Spotify this morning announced an almost 3000% increase in streams of his music. Last night, hundreds gathered in Bowie's hometown of Brixton and sang tracks like "Life On Mars?" in the streets.

Bowie released his 25th and final studio record Blackstar on 8 January, his 69th birthday, as a "parting gift".
