Dance Lessons cavort through breakups on sophomore single “New Job”
Steeped in a sound so confident it would suggest the London based trio have been making records for years, Dance Lessons return with sophomore single “New Job”.
Following a strong debut with “SMABTO”, London's Dance Lessons trade smooth jazz embellishments for a modernist pop groove. Comeback single “New Job” bounces male and female vocals around a memorable chorus, with the trio as bold and tuneful as before but with a welcome new layer of production.
Dance Lessons’ fresh blend involves radio-friendly pop elements and a charming nostalgia not dissimilar to the soundscape in which the Haim sisters have crafted in recent years. The confidence of “New Job” isn’t misplaced; the melodies click and it has all the right ingredients to sound like a hit whilst remaining breezily unforced.
The accompanying video turns the empty streets of Los Angeles into a dancefloor amidst the COVID-19 lockdown. Filmed with no crew and minimal equipment, dancers Gbari and Shantel perform with a vibrant energy as the streets are devoid of any other signs of life.
“'New Job' has been like a self-fulfilling prophecy. It was never meant to become personal,” says lead-vocalist Ann. “I initially wrote it late last year – before a break-up. Afterwards, I went on a mad search for new ways to distract myself. The song shows the similarities in the perspective of two people post-breakup, both using distractions to mask the sadness”.
