Swedish duo AOP return with the psych-pop haze of “A New Beginning”
AOP, which stands for the pleasingly-utilitarian Adult Orientated Pop, is the project of well-travelled Swedish duo Mattias Gustavsson and Martin Fogelström, whose careers to date have seen them play with Dungen and Life on Earth!. They're now a couple of releases old and working towards their debut album with new single “A New Beginning".
One of AOP's formative gigs came at a release party for a documentary about The Source Family, a New Age 70s cult, where they performed in front of an audience that included members of the Family. With that backstory, you would think AOP’s music went for cosmic sprawl, but “A New Beginning” keeps its psychedelic side confined to a little woozy synth.
In the main, it’s a sweet, jangly indie pop song that kicks sharply and slickly, and one that snaps and shuffles its way to being breezy, melodic and charming.
The band say: “'A New Beginning' depicts the dysfunctional relationship between the human ‘civilization’ and nature, in the form of a conversation between two lovers way past their expiration date”.
