Continuing the momentum that’s been building following the release of the stunning Thinking About Thinking EP, Laura Groves returns today with the touching piano ballad “Friday”.
Where Thinking About Thinking bubbled with subtle electronic flourishes - a new direction for Groves whose former Blue Roses project delved deep into traditionalist song craft - “Friday” reverts back to Groves’ early roots and continues to set her head and shoulders above her peers.
Although still in demo form, “Friday” sounds remarkably finished. Groves’ sole accompaniment a mournful piano and cooing harmonies, her voice longing and sorrowful as it descends into the bridge - “tell me what you’re feeling anytime, anywhere”. A beautifully fragile three minutes, “Friday” is a song that begs to be heard in solitude - it’s far too intimate to share with others.
Laura Groves will play London’s St Pancras Old Church on 30 July. Listen to the touching “Friday” below.
