Foals’ “London Thunder” gets the Tusks treatment ahead of her debut LP release
Foals’ “London Thunder” is a stark ode to returning to the capital after touring abroad; fitting subject material for Tusks (real name Emily Underhill), whose debut album was written between Canada, France, and the UK.
With the past few years of her life spanning England, Portugal, Australia, Vietnam, France, and Canada, it’s no surprise the cut – originally found on the Oxford five-piece’s fourth LP, What Went Down – struck a chord.
Where Foals’ version deals in sparse keys and the plaintive howl of lead singer Yannis Philippakis, Underhill’s cover takes her measured vocal to a space laden in echoing, reverb-drenched guitar. Accompanied by live footage of the aforementioned session, it’s found a well-deserved closing slot on the tracklist of forthcoming debut EP Dissolve, alongside previous singles “Dissolve” and “Last”.
"I never planned for this to go on the album,” Underhill explains. “But we had a spare half an hour at the end of a recording session, so we decided to try out a live take. Luckily we got it in one and it felt right to finish the album with it.”
