Tame Impala and Melody's Echo Chamber members channel instrumental chiaroscuro as Aquaserge

Founded more than 10 years ago, its members have played on stage with Tame Impala, Melody's Echo Chamber, and Stereolab. Now, Aquaserge is finally emerging as a force of its own.

A staple of the fascinating French underground pop scene catalyzed by La Souterraine, Aquaserge weaves a circuitous thread between experimental and pop. Taking influence from the Canterbury scene and the Surrealists, the French band is releasing Laisse ça être, their fourth full-length album, in February. Announcing their humour from the onset (the album title is a direct translation of Let It Be), the quintet takes you on a journey full of delicious quirks, both musically, and lyrically.

"Virage Sud" ("South Section") is the first single, sans lyrics. As they told resurrected French magazine Magic, RPM recently, the track is a nod to its members moving back to Toulouse in the South of France. The band wanted to offer a 'musical chiaroscuro', with a structure in the spirit of The Beatles' "A Day in the Life".

The band's bassist, Audrey Ginestet, directed the video and names the film Hors Satan as a visual reference.

"There's something magical watching people listening to music. The face is the reflection of the soul.", Ginestet says. "The first face in the video is Julien Barbagallo, historic member of the band and now part-time free agent (he is the drummer of Tame Impala and has a solo project under the name Barbagallo), who came up with the melody of the song."
