Freddie Gibbs really does keep getting better and better. He is still best known for his fantastic ‘National Anthem’, but pretty much everything he has released since then has demonstrated an increasingly confident, increasingly complex rhythmic sensibility. Meanwhile he remains lyrically fascinating: melancholic, introspective; seemingly unsure of himself one moment, and full of hubris the next.
I can think of few better people for the Indiana resident to team up with than Stones Throw demi-god Madlib. ‘Thuggin’’ is the first fruit of a collaboration that will apparently produce a full-length at some point next year. Stream the title track below.
