The London duo, Congregation, have released into the world, a modern day shot of old school blues. A record packed full of twang and rustic depth, the pair, Victoria Yeulet and Benjamin Prosser, have put together a bass thumping debut-album.Opening track ‘Dose of Hell’ starts with the kind of bass picking that puts you back in to a time of early Blues simplicity. The beat remains steady throughout the album, with a sprinkling of finger clicking and repetitive vocals. Yeulet’s words are as fast as an old steam train, even when the chugging bass is at its fastest. The stand out track for me has to be ‘Never Forgive’. The opening cords instantly take your mind to those of the Pink Panther theme tune. Now, I know that's not necessarily a compliment, but due to the catchiness of it all, it stands out from a crowd of songs that at times can mould into one. The rest of the track hits a higher tempo until the latter moments of the song when a flicky bass solo is only joined by the drawn out voice of Yeulet.Yeulet’s vocals of nonchalance border on the easy listening variety. Most of the time she repeats the previous line, the words rolling out of her mouth creating a further drawn out movement through the pitches that can come across plain lazy, but a lazy that has seductive pull to it, especially in ‘Head Above Water’. Hmmm.Unfortunately picking out individual, and distinct, songs proves problematic. Put the first six tracks on a separate disc and it would snare me. But with the second halves lack of variation, despite the love cravings of Yeulet's voice, mean I just limp away like a wounded animal: effected, but not for life.
