Paul Simon gives life to the weird and the wonderful with "The Werewolf"
Ahead of the release of his 13th solo album next month, Paul Simon places humour in a harrowing tale with new track "The Werewolf".
Following lead single "Wristband", "The Werewolf" gives a life to a darkened sense of whimsy along dancing refrains. Rhythmic grooves set a suspenseful backdrop to Simon's wry commentary, building through a rich tapestry of thriving percussion, vocal echoes, brass stabs, organ cries, wolf howls, and sound effects.
Inspired in part by Harry Partch - a 20th century American composer who invented his own instruments in microtonal tunings - the backbone of Stranger To Stranger is rooted in musical experimentation. Traveling to the laboratory at Montclair State University in New Jersey (where the original Harry Partch instrument collection was being curated), he was able to give form to these vibrant new sounds.
“It’s about getting you to actually hear something in a new way," Simon explains of the album. "It’s about making music that sounds old and new at the same time; music with a sense of mystery.”
“Sound is the theme of this album as much as it’s about the subjects of the individual songs. If people get that, I’ll be pleased,” he continues. “The right song at the right time can live for generations. A beautiful sound, well that's forever.”
