Ethel illuminates a mutual womenhood on "Pixie Dust"
The latest signee to +1 (Rejjie Snow, Anna of the North, Nate Husser), Ethel emerges with new single "Pixie Dust".
Ethel is a Paris-based newcomer with a tight grasp on the artist she is and wants to become. After moving to London at just 17, she developed such a strong sense of self, developing the creative voice that she is ready to share today.
Returning to France and meeting her current producer (Banshee), Ethel found the catalyst that led to her new release "Pixie Dust" - a track spurred on by both the females and friendships that exist in her life.
The track, is an ethereal welcome into her world, one that she has been able to mould through an upbringing of artists such as Prince and Stevie Wonder, as well as through her own exploration and curiosity. The likes of James Blake, The Internet and Solange are just a few who inspire, as is evident in the sonic foundation of this latest track. "Pixie Dust" is a track wrapped in synths and spurred on by kick drums.
Her tender delivery guides the track, but it is ultimately an ode to just how the song feels and what it means to her personally. “I went to the studio and remembered this uplifting conversation I had with one of my friends - admitting we were somehow intimidated by one another yet realising our friendship was never rooted in jealousy but admiration. She said ‘You and I are made of the same stardust’, which moved me greatly.”
“I wanted this song to foil the rivalry that often exists among women, by expressing how looking up to this person illuminates me.”
She describes the writing process as an easy one, spilling out of her upon hearing the instrumental for the first time in the studio. “Banshee (my main producer and collaborator) played me this loop, and all the melodies and lyrics unfolded - we recorded everything within a day and kept all the vocal takes from the demo so we had a full song by the end of the day! I remember being so excited bumping it in the studio, so when this excitement doesn’t go away with time, usually I want to release the song ASAP!”
She was right to be so excited by it. The track is proof that so much can be said without saying too much at all and the uplifting message sets the mood for her upcoming work. “I wanted this song to foil the rivalry that often exists among women, by expressing how looking up to this person illuminates me.”
Her sonic world is one that is worth exploring, and this is just the beginning.
