Holy Ghost – Static On The Wire EP

Sometimes, you just know what label a band is on without even looking. You know when a label just has that pre-defined sound, style, and substance? Well, Brooklyn’s Holy Ghost are signed to DFA. They are so signed to DFA. Of course they are. And it’s not an insult to the label, it just… makes sense.

Like the sexier younger brother of James Murphy’s LCD troupe, Holy Ghost make slick beats with a funk of swooning vocals and the kind of melting bass lines and cheap SFX that would make Chromeo jealous.

Static On The Wire, the title track to the EP, stands as an opener. It’s a delicious blend of sweltering chorus and a hooked out synth riff that almost sets up the following three tracks for a slight trip. While it’s certainly the strongest track on the record, there’s still plenty of enjoyment to be had as it’s six and a half minutes wrap up.

The opening loop of ‘I Will Come Back’ is the crispest call to the floor since the glitch pops of father Murphy getting innocuous, while the percussive and (almost terribly) tropical breakdown in ‘I Know I Hear’ makes me grin and shuffle out my seat.

I guess what this EP is missing are those standout moments. Certainly subtlety is a virtue at times, but now and again you just want to scream DRUNK GIRLS, or slur a Tenderoni.

….

Writing that last paragraph I just realised I’d disproved my opening point and made myself sound a fool. Holy Ghost are signed to DFA, but that doesn’t mean they should be held against the other acts on the label and judged as such. This is a great EP, and even if it’s not entirely original, it still proves a sophisticated soundtrack.
