Post Malone and Ariana Grande's record label drops "urban" term from company vocabulary
Republic Records, the label that Post Malone, Ariana Grande, and many other are signed to, have announced they'll no longer be using the term "urban" in its company vocabulary.
Over the weekend, Republic Records shared a statement announcing that the term "urban" will no longer be used to describe departments, employee titles or music genres.
The statement lands amidst the Black Lives Matter protests happening across the US and the world, sparked by George Floyd's murder at the hands of the Minneapolis police department (which will be dismantled entirely).
In the statement, the label writes, "Effective immediately, Republic Records will remove "urban" from our verbiage in describing departments, employee titles and music genres. We encourage the rest of the music industry to follow suit as it is important to shape the future of what we want it to look like, and not adhere to the outdated structures of the past."
