Listen to Father John Misty cover Tim Heidecker's anti-Trump ballad "Trump's Private Pilot"
Father John Misty has shared his stark cover of Tim Heidecker's anti-Donald Trump ballad "Trump's Private Pilot".
The song was originally released by Heidecker as part of the anti-Trump 30 Days, 50 Songs campaign (it's almost doubled in size since beginning last month). "Trump's Private Pilot" is written from the perspective of Trump's Private Pilot - who is singing about wanting to deliberately crash the plane with Trump on board. It's dark and steeped in maudlin keys - it's one of the darkest black comedy songs of the year, made darker by Misty's melancholy murmurs.
"I wrote this song a month or so before the Republican National Convention after thinking that we were running out of options to stop the Trump Train," wrote Heidecker of the original tune. "My humor tends to skew dark, so I imagined a kamikaze style situation, where the pilot sacrifices himself for the sake of the country. I’ve performed it live a few times, and let me tell you: there’s a real cathartic satisfaction in singing the last few lines, and I always choke up a bit."
