BBC sign new Glastonbury deal, launch initiative coverage plan
The BBC has signed a new four-year licence deal with Glastonbury festival.
The Beeb, who offer extensive coverage of the British festival both online and only digital TV and radio, have also outlined new “initiative broadcasting” plans similar to the way they covered the Olympics and last year’s Hackney Weekend.
Acting Director General Tim Davie said:
“Our ambition this year is to bring audiences right to the heart of our live coverage with our most sophisticated offering yet online and on mobile. We want to build on the success of our digital innovation at the Olympics and Hackney Weekend. We know the public is demanding totally different levels of coverage of events now.”
One addition will be split-screen viewing of multiple stages, with all the main stages aired live.
Davie continued:
“You’ll be able to get into that festival and enjoy it in a way you have never seen a music festival being covered before and that will set a new benchmark. So simultaneous screening of the stages and we think that 50% of the audience to Glastonbury will be watching on a tablet or mobile, not just on the telly now, and the BBC will shape its output in that way.”
This year’s leg of the fest will take place at Worthy Farm in Somerset between 26-30 June.
