Listen: Frøkedal – “I See You” [Premiere]
Anne Lise Frøkedal’s voice resonates like an artifact from decades past. The Norwegian singer-songwriter— who was formerly a member of the bands I Was A King and Harrys Gym—has something of a Fleetwood Mac / Joni Mitchell vibe about her.
“I See You” keeps it simple: a violin, acoustic guitar and bare-bones drum set-up are the only discernible instruments on the track. Frøkedal’s vocals are mournful but not desolate, wistful but never twee. Most importantly, her melody is crafted with meditative warmth—its gentleness makes it endlessly listenable. Still, at the heart of the folk-soaked offering, Frøkedal lets pop music provide the framework for her songwriting.
“I realised that whatever I think I write, I write pop songs,” she said. “Even if it feels like I’m writing something that’s a bit far off what I normally do”.
Frøkedal's debut EP is expected sometime later this year. She plays her first gig in the UK on 26 May at London’s Waiting Room.
