John Joseph Brill takes a new route on the beautifully breezy "I'm Not Alright"
John Joseph Brill has revealed "I'm Not Alright", a brand new '80s-dunked cut that takes the singer/songwriter down a fresh path.
The track appears on a new EP of the same name, produced by Bear's Den's Andrew Davie.
"We’re old friends and for a record this personal I wanted someone I trusted to take care of my songs. I’m delighted with what we were able to create," says Brill of the collaboration. "At the time of writing the song I'd just been through a breakup and found myself broke and with nowhere to live. And while superficially that's what the song's about, it grew into something deeper for me. These are strange and uncertain times and I really believe that no matter what your story is, everyone should feel like if they need to, they can raise their hand and say 'I'm Not Alright' and for that to be okay."
This new offering sees the London-based artist veering away from the turbulent tones of his previous material, which flitted between folk, post-punk, gothicky pop, towards vintage electro. "I'm Not Alright" is a matted mesh of intricate layers and breezy hooks - it's still got bucolic guitars and Brill's velvety baritone, but there's a distinctly vintage vibe that washes over you.
Brill has also confirmed a new London headline date - he plays The Waiting Room on 12 April.
