The Wintersleep Guide to Halifax, Nova Scotia

14 July 2017, 10:30

Canadian indie rock group Wintersleep guide us through their favourite parts of home city Halifax.

How would you describe Halifax to someone who's never been?

It's a beautiful port city with incredibly (and sometimes awkwardly) friendly people. Lots of great local dining and vibrant arts. Lots of areas outside Halifax worth going to. Easy to drive to beaches outside the city. Cars stop for you even if you're just thinking about crossing the street... they aren't playing a trick on you, they just really like letting you get on your way.

Who are the best local musicians/bands/artists?

Walrus. Not You. The Everywheres.

What's the best venue to watch live music?

Marquee Ballroom.

What's the best club?

Marquee Ballroom.

Where's the best record store?

Taz.

Where's the best places to eat?

Brooklyn Warehouse. 2 Doors Down (good affordable eats). Talay Thai. Cafe Istanbul is a great lunch spot. Haven't been in a year though... those were all notable spots last time.

Best places to drink?

Henry House. Toms Little Havana. Stillwell (though not enough pilsner/normal beers available).

Favourite urban legend/myth?

Henry House is apparently haunted. I don't know if that's my favourite myth as I don't know many details other than that general concept...

What's your favourite local slang word? What does it mean?

"And there it was, gone..." It's not Halifax slang but a phrase from a nice French town around where I grew up called Pubnico.

What are the best sights to see and places to visit?

The lighthouse in Peggy's Cove is great. The ferry from Halifax to Dartmouth is short and so nice day or night. Dartmouth is amazing too and worth a dart over. Two If By Sea is this incredible bakery/coffee shop that's worth the short ferry over alone.

How do you get around the city?

Walking. It's built around a hill so it's a good workout.

Where is the best place to relax? To take a walk?

Point Pleasant Park. The waterfront is really nice to walk around too.

What's the worst thing about Halifax?

That I don't live there anymore.

What's the best thing about Halifax?

The air. The sea. People.
