The ST. MARTiiNS Guide To Dundee, Scotland

31 May 2018, 17:00

Scottish lo-fi pop duo ST. MARTiiNS give us a virtual tour of their home city of Dundee ahead, with members Katie Lynch and Mark Johnston telling us about the best place to eat, the best venue, and more.

How would you describe Dundee to someone who's never been?

When you've been here forever, like we have, it has a really specific feeling. It has a weird force field that draws you back to it. It can be really cool but also really oppressive but I guess that applies to any hometown. For the most part though, it's ours. And it's really sunny.

Who are the key musicians in Dundee?

One of the more notable musicians from Dundee has to be The Associates' frontman Billy Mackenzie.

What's the best venue to watch live music?

Clarks on Lindsay Street.

Best club?

I don’t want to talk about it.

What's the best place to buy records in your city?

Assai Records (Mark works for them, please they know where I live.)

Best places to eat?

There’s a Mexican called Más which opened and we go there a lot.

Any nice drinking spots?

The Art Bar or the George Orwell is where we hail for a pint.

Who are your local heroes?

It’s not so local but Crocodile Dundee and Lorraine Kelly.

Any favourite urban myths/legends?

It’s not so local but Marilyn Manson had a rib removed. Also not a myth.

What are the best sites or places to visit?

We just go to the beach next to my parents' house, or we go to Wormit Beach across the bridge and Mark skims stones. We sit and speak about the same things we’ve spoken about since we were 13. The new Waterfront is also shaping up, everyone and their nan's dog is saying the V&A will be good too.

How do you get around your city?

Mark's car... he’s actually Dundee’s only Uber driver. Also the 1A bus service.

Favourite local slang word?

Mulk; milk.

Favourite place to relax/take a nice walk?

I don’t actually know how to relax.

What's the worst thing about Dundee?

It can be a challenging place at times to try pursue a creative career.

What's the best thing about Dundee?

It’s built on Scotland’s only actively extinct volcano.

ST. MARTiiNS play Clarks on Lindsay Street on 31 May. Follow the band on Soundcloud.
