With plans long in the making, leading UK independent record store Rough Trade has finally opened a new shop in New York City, what is their first branch in the U.S.
The store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn opened on Monday (25 November), with the site much bigger than its flagship Rough Trade East shop on London’s Brick Lane. The 15,000 square foot store will play host to in-store gigs and other live events.
“New York and London are similar in many ways — they’re kaleidoscopic celebrations of global differences and similarities,” Rough Trade co-president Stephen Godfroy recently told Billboard. “They enjoy an open-mindedness, a deep respect for the past, a voracious appetite for the future, which all combines to produce a climate that suits our individual approach to music retail.”
