Evenings – Yore

Nathan Broaddus may be only 22 years old, but he may as well be twice that. The Harlem-born producer better known as Evenings makes music stuck somewhere between Man-Machine-era Kraftwerk and early Depeche Mode filtered through modern trance. That said, Evenings’ latest release, Yore, matches the exuberance of a twenty-something making music.

Which explains why songs like ‘Lately’ and ‘Goodbye Forever’ feature such uplifting chord progressions. And why the latter features gentle waves washing around the beat, suggesting both that he finds nature to be as musical as any instrument man has created and that he’s got maturity well beyond his years.

And maturity can certainly be found all over this compilation album. The youthful explosion that occurs half way though ‘Still Young’, for example, demonstrates that Broaddus trusts his listeners’ ears enough to follow his logic: after 90 seconds of low-key, jittery percussion and a spiralling synth line, the song suddenly kickstarts into a pinball rave (albeit, a restrained one). This, of course, is simply Broaddus exclaiming, “Yeah, I make music influenced by bands way older than me, but I’m still young! Let’s have some fun!”

Naturally, his age is why some modern EDM-influence can be found within the collection, even if the overall mood originates during the Carter/Thatcher era. ‘Ager ’ is the best example here: over a hazy synth, a slow-pulsing beat staggers about in an attempt to lead a sampled voice lost in the fog. The song is hauntingly beautiful, but the real beauty here is Evenings’ desire (and shocking success) in having it both ways. He may be creating EDM, but he isn’t suggesting that guys like Martin Gore and Ralf Hütter are simply veterans. No, Evenings sees them as his peers.
