Mello do throwback better than most. The American hip-hop label is best known for releases from the ever-entertaining Oddisee – but their SXSW compilation demonstrates that there is more to Mello than sunny instrumentals.
Gensu Dean‘s compilation standout, ‘Ramesses’, sounds like a peerlessly odd collection of MCs hidden up in the baggage racks of a travelling circus’s ghost train, each occasionally swiping at an unsuspecting child’s hat. The real star here is Homeboy Sandman, whose spectacularly louche, Andre 3000-esque verse ends in hilarious fashion. Clever, fun, and just sleazy enough.
