Download the sixth annual edition of the Ho! Ho! Ho! Canada Christmas compilation

17 December 2014, 09:43 | Written by Ro Cemm

It gives us great pleasure to present the sixth edition of Ho! Ho! Ho! Canada, our seasonal compilation, which, as ever is given in the hope that it will provide an antidote to hearing the same old Christmas songs year after year, while at the same time celebrating some of our favourite Canadian artists.

Download the compilation here.

As ever, we're eternally grateful to all the artists who have contributed to the compilation, and those who took up the challenge to provide a brand new seasonal song for us. Huge thanks to Michael Feuerstack, Charlotte Cornfield, Fresh Snow, Dracula Legs, Kashka, The Acorn and Find The Others. Jim Bryson and Amanda Rheaume even stood up to take a further challenge: to produce a song about the days between Christmas and New Year. Thanks also go out to Eric Portelance for the image used in the artwork and Mr James Burton, without whom the whole project wouldn’t have been possible.

This year we wanted to spotlight the hard work of others, particularly those who have put together their own seasonal records in aid of good causes. While this compilation is offered for free, we hope that, in the spirit of giving, you might consider donating to a charity of your choice, or perhaps choose to support one of the following charity records.

Machu Picchu’s track "All I Want For Christmas is A Hoverboard" was originally featured on The Egg Nog Experience, a charity record in aid of The Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Vancouver label Kingfisher Bluez is the brainchild of Tim the Mute, a keen supporter of his local scene, putting out records by the likes of Apollo Ghosts, Dirty Beaches, White Poppy and Xiu Xiu, amongst others. Over the last few years they have been releasing limited edition seasonal 7”, with collectable artwork depicting a snowy town, a new house released each year. Sales of the single go to 1-800-SUICIDE and Crisis Centre BC. This years single is Kim Gray’s "Santa Knows (I’ve Been Bad)", and we are also pleased to include Colin Cowan & The Elastic Stars "Tale of The Eye Of Winter", also released on the label earlier this year.

Zunior have released numerous Christmas compilations over the years, all in aid of the Daily Bread Food Bank. This year they have broken with tradition a little, and in celebration of their 10th Anniversary asked Great Lake Swimmer Tony Dekker to cover 10 tracks, one for each year of Zunior’s existence. Luckily for us that meant a cover of The Burning Hell’s "Last Winter". We’ve also included Jim Guthrie’s track from Zunior’s Country Blues themed Christmas comp a few years back for good measure. You can pick up all of these, as well as a special Zunior Eats cookbook featuring recipes from the likes of Leif Vollebekk, Ron Sexsmith, The Barenaked Ladies and more from Zunior.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Canada VI is dedicated to the memory of Derek Bachman, who passed away suddenly last week aged 38. Derek was always ready to help out, to work out a way to make something work, and to make things better. He was tireless in championing Saskatchewan and the bands that came from there. We know he would be delighted that Rah Rah were representing the province on this compilation. His passion, dedication and above all his friendship will be missed.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Canada VI was compiled and curated by Ro Cemm.
