Perhaps being half-Scottish myself, I’m slightly bias, but let’s face it, Scotland does have a penchant for producing some rather fine music. And it doesn’t all feature bagpipes. A lot of pressure then, for Brendan Campbell, when it comes to launching his debut EP Twilight Bird. It seems heritage is certainly on his side, as the four tracks are enchanting, well-crafted, and beautifully simple.‘Burgers and Murders’, mixes current issues with ultimately timeless ones. The lyrics allude to his home town of Glasgow, the "loud pubs" and "under the bridge where the boy was murdered". Despite the negative image, the track has a sense of perhaps not quite hope, but certainly contentment, as Campbell journeys through the streets. All the tracks feature acoustic guitar, delicately picked, to give an earthy, folk feel. Despite his broad Scottish accent, Campbell’s vocals are very similar to Nick Drake’s, an coupled with the minimal accompaniment, the parallels are striking. Campbell’s music however is slightly more upbeat and seems to move along at a faster pace than Nick Drake. The vocal harmonies the title track clearly draw their inspiration from older folk music, and more recently the solo album from Idlewild lead singer Roddy Woomble.Twilight Bird EP showcases Campbell’s raw talent, no post-production work, no huge accompaniment, just simply a man and a guitar with some strong lyrics.Once again, Scotland delivers the goods.
