Morrissey says his new cat will be called Chester Bennington and claims he invented cancel culture
Morrissey has published a new interview on his Morrissey Central site, in which he reveals his new cat will be named after Linkin Park's late vocalist Chester Bennington, and claims he invented cancel culture.
The interview, conducted by his nephew Sam Esty Rayner, sees Morrissey answer questions about a range of topics including politics, the pandemic, cancel culture, major labels and more.
On British politics, Morrissey said he's still hasn't "ever voted for a political party in my entire life" and his "interest has curdled recently because, well, I was only attacked a couple of years ago because I had actually hit on something."
Speaking about the pandemic and the lockdown restrictions, Morrissey said, "The bigger problem is that nobody can any longer agree with anyone else, and this is the main outcome of Con-vid. It has brought the worst out in people, and we weren’t ever in this together."
He also agreed with his nephew that "Covid Society is also the precise description of slavery", and said, "And more people are now forced into poverty which is another form of slavery, as is tax and Council Tax and all the other ways in which we are pinned down and tracked. Our present freedom is restricted to visiting supermarkets and buying sofas."
When asked about being cancelled, Morrissey responded, "You can’t cancel someone who has always been cancelled. When did you last see me on television, or hear me on the radio? I unintentionally invented the condition of being cancelled!"
His nephew also asked Morrissey if he thinks he'll get signed by a major label after he was dropped by BMG last year. Morrissey responded, "No. It almost hardly matters that the album is remarkable. It almost hardly matters that you have a dedicated audience. These are no longer important considerations."
Towards the end of the interview, Rayner asked a series of quick-fire questions from fans, one of which was: "what will be the name of your new cat?" Morrissey's replied, "Chester Bennington."
