Gordi unveils new cut "Extraordinary Life"
Gordi has released new single "Extraordinary Life" as a final preview of her forthcoming Our Two Skins album that lands this Friday (26 June).
"Extraordinary Life" is the fifth single to be shared from Gordi's new LP, arriving after earlier releases "Unready", "Volcanic", "Aeroplane Bathroom" and "Sandwiches".
Gordi says of her new outing, "I was standing in a shower in a hostel in Ghent at 2am towards the end of 2017 and I started humming. I began recording the demo in stairwells across Europe while I was on tour with Asgeir and in most of the demo vocals you can hear distant chatter in Icelandic. For all the turmoil and anguish described in the record, this song just sits in pure joy. I like the idea that the ultimate gesture of love is to make someone feel exceptional; like they deserve an extraordinary life."
Our Two Skins will follow on from 2017's Reservoir, and saw Gordi recruit producers Chris Messina (Bon Iver, Bruce Hornsby, Big Red Machine) and Zach Hanson (Bon Iver, Hand Habits, Waxahatchee, Tallest Man), who travelled from Wisconsin to Canowindral, Australia to record the album with Gordi at a old cottage with no wi-fi or phone service.
Sophie Payten, aka Gordi, says of the process, "The idea was about cutting ourselves off from all things, including choice, and forcing us to be a lot more minimalist in the way that we can create stuff. I find I'm much more creative when I'm surrounded by nothing than when I'm surrounded by lots."
She adds of the LP, "A big theme of the record is: there's nothing to hide behind. We didn't have all the bells and whistles. You’re just standing there, with your hands in your pockets going: this is me. This is it. This is all I have."
