‘Lynchian’ is an over-used adjective in music. It seems to have come to mean anything a bit creepy, slightly erratic – something that sounds a bit like driving through the woods at night.
There is no escaping it, though: Norway’s Sacred Harp really could soundtrack Twin Peaks. They have the same uncanniness; a sense of something familiar and yet not quite right. We are well versed in the elements, and yet they are simultaneously somehow alien – like someone has had music described to them, and have then been told to make it without ever having heard any.
‘Found In The Open Country’ illustrates this perfectly: it is part widescreen Americana, part ’60s garage, with singer Jessica Sligter’s frequently discordant vocal providing an odd counterpoint to the tightly wound rhythm section.
