Richmond Fontaine are one of those bands. The sort of band who can both shape and reflect your mood. The sort of band who, by rights, should be globe-spanningly huge.
The Portland outfit are about to release their ninth (count ‘em) studio album, The High Country – the latest example of the band’s continued interweaving of music and storytelling in something that, perhaps, approaches the great American tradition.
‘The Mechanic’s Life’ is taken from that record, and is as bleakly Midwestern as you may have come to expect from songwriter Willy Vlautin. It is the sound of austere halfway towns and inconsolable heartbreak – and it is very beautiful indeed.
Richmond Fontaine will be curating a night of music and film at the Prince Charles Cinema on 21 July, during which they will also be premiering the video for the next single, ‘Lost In The Trees.’ Tickets are available here. In the meantime, download ‘The Mechanic’s Life’ below.
