Mikhael Paskalev drops glittering short film for euphoric new single "Witness"
Liverpool-based artist Mikhael Paskalev is sharing his new single "Witness" and its accompanying short film.
The film opens with Paskalev answering a questionnaire given to him by 'Death'. After finishing all the questions he is granted a final wish - to express himself through dance. It's a moving clip, but once Paskalev dons his costume and steps into an abandoned swimming pool, the magic begins proper.
"Witness" is an unrestrained bout of shapeshifting pop. It doesn't really conform to one idea or style, with fragments of disparate genres working in unison to yank at your heartstrings - woozy grooves, rock'n'roll riffs, and intoxicating hooks all build towards a breathtaking climax. Paskalev dances his heart out in the film - it's an exhilarating experience from start to finish, with moments of poignancy throught. This is a perfect blend of sound and vision.
The short film is produced, directed, and edited by Pasklev and the song's producer Joe Wills.
“The song ‘Witness’ is pretty much about finding that release from whatever hurt or self doubt you’ve been holding," Paskalev says. "That calming that comes from losing yourself in the moment. When it was time to make the music video, I really wanted to make something that felt sincere, but daring.”
"The film is loosely based on my day to day life, I guess," the Norwegian-Bulgarian musician continues. "Being caught in my own vanity, the big daydreams, and the worries of falling short. A numbing loop of thoughts and the makings of a passive existence. To go head to head with it, my emotional compadre Joe Wills (producer/death) and I decided to be overtly ambitious and set ourselves up for failure by directing a video, alongside great mate and experienced cinematographer, Jasper Spanning. The result is probably my favorite thing I´ve ever put out. I guess now that I think about it this video is just about two dudes in a quarter life crisis, wanting to flip the finger to self-made pressures of completing an album.”
