Jockstrap embark on a weird trip on sweet new outing “Acid”
From starring in a BAFTA winning film to solo projects and touring with slowthai, rising duo Jockstrap are set for their busiest period to date with “Acid”, their first release of 2020.
Music making is often a hustle with life-propping jobs enabling more creative endeavours, however this is a sentiment that Jockstrap take to heart. The band’s members Georgia Ellery and Taylor Skye have had a whirlwind 18 months since the release of their debut mini-album Love Is The Key to the City and its 2019 remix collection Lost My Key In The Club, and between them have excelled on a wide range of projects.
With Ellery starring in Cornish indie film Bait (whose director Mark Jenkin won the award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer at this year’s BAFTAs), performing the film’s score at the BFI with Welsh sensation Gwenno and also working with Underworld on their experimental outing DRIFT, to Syke penning his own solo project and performing keys for slowthai, it’s all got a little crazy over in their London camp. Now back in the game on their mutual vehicle, their passion is apt on Jockstrap’s new single “Acid”.
Unabashed wonky pop, the track carries a disarmingly naive charm that subverts its complexities. Weaving between emotive keys and heart-tugging strings, “Acid” dabbles in rosy, rippling synths with a playful intrigue as Ellery’s vocal dances with that of Skye - his debut vocal outing on one of the band’s compositions. Oddball and sweet, it’s like a warped soundtrack to an old romantic film.
“‘Acid’ is a track for my brother,” shares Ellery of the release. “It’s expansive, vibrant and filled with love. Taylor designed this beautiful sound world: I sent him a 6/8 ballad and he sent me back this other worldly thing.”
“Georgia sent me this swooning, expressive, tender piano demo and I did my best to match it,” adds Skye. “It was real fun to produce. I feel like this is the most uplifting song we’ve made so far - it almost has summer vibes.”
