The mysterious M. T. Hadley returns with the glitchy sound of “Reticent”
Frank Ocean approved and undeniably elusive, regardless, M. T. Hadley has been causing quite a stir. Now he returns with his latest single “Reticent”.
Following in the wake of his recent singles “Private Eye”, “Rattle” and the 2016 debut “Janet” - which found support a year later when played on Frank Ocean’s own blondedRADIO on Beats 1 - M. T. Hadley’s new single “Reticent” puts a twist on his previous work.
Immediately diving in with the abrupt jolt of synth, “Reticent” spasms and glitches its way through its tenure with a palpable anxiety. With both the electronics and Hadley’s stylistically auto-tuned vocal striking a melancholic tone, the track is a sodden introspection on miscommunicated love. Accompanied by an unreservedly DIY visual featuring an unknowingly complicit snail, the subtitles to the track reveal Hadley’s inner intentions when creating his latest effort.
“'Reticent’ is about having painful, stifled conversations with someone because you care so deeply about them, and what they might think of your words,” he explains. “As if with each utterance you may undo a thread of the great shroud of unspoken understanding held tight between you”.
