When Vaults revealed “Cry No More” amid a cloud of twinkling mystery in September 2013, it was instantly apparent that a special electro-pop outfit had arrived.
Almost a year down the line and this stunning debut fails to get old. The challenge remains - particularly for an enigmatic outfit with only one live show to recall - to keep pace with early offerings; Vaults have done so quite brilliantly.
April’s “Premonitions” was a punchy, string-inspired follow-up to the aforementioned tone-setter and now the Virgin/EMI-signed London trio, about whom we still know virtually nothing, have unveiled their third piece of pin-point electro-pop: once again a powerful, inspirational vocal performance leads the way above cold, glistening bells and sizeable, sub-heavy production, bringing to mind the likes of James Blake and SOHN - names who can now certainly be considered peers.
”You took what you wanted to take / Yet you never wanted nothing from me” rings out in the 80’s hue chorus with the kind of eerie, subtle melancholy we have come to expect from a band that show no sign of letting-up from high-quality hints at a quite exceptional full-length to come.
Stream this wonderful new one from Vaults below; another cut with a seemingly endless listening “Lifespan”.
Following their sold-out show at London’s Courtyard Vaults have announced a headline show at the ICA on 3 September, tickets are available here.
