Atlanta based quintet Mood Rings continue to impress with a strong follow up from April’s rocksteady debut single ‘Pathos y Lagrimas’.
It would be easy to dimiss ‘The Line’ as another unnecessary flirtation with coy nostalgia and sub-John Hughes idealism that’s so abhorrent in the over-crowded world of ‘shoegaze’. But, first impressions are often misleading, and it’s with further listening that Mood Rings’ strengths are played out – in rather spectacular form.
The devil is in the detail: subtle flourishes of arpeggio synth ride against waves of echo, whilst the driving drum beat (akin to Hearts’ game-changing 2012 single ‘Wings’), weeping guitar and cooed vocals add a sense of fantasy and wonder. It’s all rather lovely stuff and hints at an equally impressive debut full length – VPI Harmony – which drops via Mexican Summer next month.
