Listen to Prince's impromptu cover of Shania Twain
A welcome discovery from music’s lost and found here, with this recording of Prince giving his own take on Shania Twain’s 1998 single ‘You’re Still The One’.
The recording recently resurfaced thanks to writer Dan Chamberlain who uploaded it to his Tumblr.
Supposedly Prince had just heard the song for the first time on the radio, instantly phoning up singer friend Marva King for help, before relocating to his studio where he recorded the cover with Twain’s original music video playing in the background.
A highlight comes with the very Prince-esque guitar solo about three-quarters in.
Chamberlain writes in an accompanying note to the stream:
“Ripping old mix CDs on to my laptop I found this Napster-era cover, briefly available as a RealPlayer stream on Prince’s website.
Like his covers of “One of Us” and “I Can’t Make U Love Me” off 1996’s Emanicpation, the arrangement isn’t earth-shattering but the solo at 2:15 is terrific, plus you could not be listening to Prince cover Shania Twain, so y’know.”
