Sydney Jo Jackson merges timeless soul with modern healing in “You Should Be Here”
Birmingham-born, London-based artist Sydney Jo Jackson embodies the essence of old-school soul legends like Millie Jackson and Tina Turner on "You Should Be Here"
“You Should Be Here” is both timeless and refreshing as she captures the raw power and emotional depth of these artists, adding a modern twist. It’s rare to hear such a level of class and musical maturity in today’s music scene, with Sydney staying true to her distinctive style and proving that soul is not bound by time.
Sydney blends the past and present in her songwriting, using it as a means to document her life, reflect and ultimately heal. This therapeutic process allows her to confront her own flaws, take accountability and embrace personal growth — something we could all learn from in order to break free of negative cycles.
Her honesty and vulnerability offers an authentic look into who the songwriter is, as she shares, “I can’t afford therapy, so I write songs. My music is where I say everything I think out loud — it’s unfiltered and raw in every way.”
The conception of “You Should Be Here” happened in Bali, in just one take, whilst vibing to a beat by Jonas Bauer. Sydney’s smokey vocals glide effortlessly over a seductive melody, where rich brass instruments intertwine with jazz-tinged guitars. The result is a track which envelops the listener in a romantic ambience, whilst subtly encouraging moments of self-reflection.
