Cariss Auburn searches for a "Distraction"
Cariss Auburn releases her glistening new single "Distraction" alongside her 00’s inspired EP Imaginary Me.
Based in Wolverhampton, Cariss Auburn emits a sense of iridescence beyond her small-town beginnings. Consumed in a world of y2k, DIY fashion and visual art, her music conveys an intricate blend of pop and R&B while having a relatability in her storytelling of everyday insecurities, and the importance of accepting yourself. Posting covers of pop icons such as Charli XCX and Solange, Auburn’s influences are clear, and her take on the ever-expanding world of pop is unique.
Brassy synths bounce throughout "Distraction". Cariss Auburn’s glossy voice smooths over the leaping pulses. The track combines genres of pop, R&B and even minimal trap deepening the chorus. The track introduces a new era for the singer too - compared to previous releases such as her 2021 EP Refraction, "Distraction" feels full allowing Auburn to explore the neverending reach of her sound.
Alongside the release, comes Auburn’s latest EP entitled Imaginary Me. Speaking on the release Auburn expressed that “Every now and again I’ll get hit with a wave of fear about my place in life versus the person I want to be. I wanted to confront that with the EP and let go of this ideal person made out of pressure and expectation. It’s a vulnerable feeling, it’s a process still and these songs are my diary entries.”
Imaginary Me is dreamy. Hues of metallic pastel gleam as Cariss Auburn sings tales of life, dipping into themes of relationship and friendship. With comparisons of some of Rina Sawayama’s earlier EPs, Auburn has emphasised her intent of infiltrating the pop sphere.
