
Thomas Powers joins forces with Julien Baker on new single, "Empty Voices"
New Zealand artist/producer – and The Naked And Famous vocalist – Thomas Powers has shared the brand new single, "Empty Voices", featuring Julien Baker.
The accompanying video for "Empty Voices" was directed by friend and long-time collaborator, Joel Kefall. The award-winning New Zealand based director has also worked with the likes of Tame Impala and Lorde.
“It's an expression of fatigue and indignation, being on the receiving end of a heated, anonymous digital altercation. At the same time, it's easy to act hypocritically and become a participant in an exchange that leaves everyone feeling despondent,” Powers says of the song. “Social media encourages impulsivity and rewards volatility: if it enrages, it engages. But often, the voices worth listening to are not the loudest - they are careful, measured, and contemplative.”
Mutual fans of each other’s work, Powers initially made contact with Julien Baker - whose career spans critically acclaimed albums and most recently countless accolades, including three Grammy Awards with boygenius – back in 2017 over X, formerly known as Twitter.
During the quiet of the 2020 lockdown, he reached back out again to see if she was interested in collaborating, which gladly she was. “I’m incredibly honoured to have Julien’s vocals and writing contributions on ‘Empty Voices’. We blasted through the recording and spend most of our studio time hanging out, watching the sunset up on a hill in Echo Park.”
A Tyrant Crying In Private, is set for release on 17 May, and is available to pre-save now.
