Having retreated homewards to record their debut album after the critical acclaim of last year’s Double Denim released EP Another Night’s Dream Reach Earth Again, Liverpudlian five-piece Outfit spent last night reminding us just why we missed them so.
Filling out the small stage and re-assuring us that we had not stumbled into Glastonbury’s Leftfield at 3 am, as support act Caulfield Beats had us believing, Outfit dived head first into Best Fit favourite ‘Drakes’: the swirling keys, eerie flickers of white noise and creeping bass line sounding as vital as ever. Keeping things at a high octane pace they broke out a brand new number ‘House of Fire’, one which saw a rare guitar led outing for frontman Andrew Hunt and one which we know is going to prove a live favourite in the coming months.
Things took a more languishing, melodic turn as Thomas Gorton vocal led ’Vehicles’ segued into next new track ‘Nothing Big’ – a subtly arranged, expertly deployed piece of electronic tinged pop, which whilst not as arresting as ‘House On Fire’ was a great indicator of just how far these boys have come, and just how you can do diversity with understatement. Ending on a buzz, ‘Two Islands’ sounded incredible, the cycling shimmying maracas and tinkering keys underlining smooth crooning vocals before the gentle percussion, and just about the entire room, were pinned down by the irresistible wails of Hunt’s guitar.
