Sufjan Stevens unveils the brand new single, "Will Anybody Ever Love Me?"
Sufjan Stevens today releases his new single, "Will Anybody Ever Love Me?", which is taken from his highly anticipated forthcoming album, Javelin.
Javelin marks Stevens’ first solo album of songs since 2020’s The Ascension, and his first in full singer-songwriter mode since 2015’s Carrie & Lowell. The brand new single, "Will Anybody Ever Love Me?" follows on from "So You Are Tired", which coincided with the album's announcement.
With the accompanying video directed by long-time collaborator Stephen Halker, on the self-produced 'Will Anybody Ever Love Me?' Stevens plays every instrument with additional vocals from adrienne maree brown, Hannah Cohen, and Megan Lui.
Discussing working with Stevens, brown says: "The first time I sang the song I started crying, I was so moved by the honesty of the questions. Sufjan is an impossibly brave and gifted writer," whilst Cohen adds, "Being in the studio with Sufjan is like watching an alchemist at work. He creates a new realm, building our voices from a gentle choir, then morphing us into sirens raging from the sea."
Javelin is accompanied by a 48-page book of art and essays all created by Stevens, including a series of meticulous collages, cut-up catalog fantasies, puff-paint word clouds, and iterative colour fields. The ten short essays offer little glimpses into loves and losses that have shaped him, and, in turn, these songs.
Javelin will be released on 6 October via Asthmatic Kitty, and is available to pre-order now.
