“It’s the age thing, you know?” My Bloody Valentine play biggest headline show yet

Last night, shoegaze pioneers My Bloody Valentine returned to London for a show at OVO Arena Wembley — continuing their first UK tour in over a decade.

This followed performances at Manchester’s Aviva Studios, Dublin’s 3Arena, and a secret homecoming gig under the name Isn’t Anything — the title of the band’s 1988 debut album — at Dublin’s National Stadium — the first show to break My Bloody Valentine’s seven-year hiatus. This tour run sees the reunion of founding members Kevin Shields (guitar/vocals), Colm Ó Cíosóig (drums), Bilinda Butcher (vocals/guitar), and Debbie Googe (bass). The band were joined by Dinosaur Jr’s J Mascis, who will also open their Glasgow show on 27 November.

While the set didn’t include any new songs, fans were treated to classic picks from their landmark 1991 album Loveless, including “When You Sleep”, “Only Shallow”, and “Soon”, with other tracks mostly selected from m b v and their 2012 collection, ep’s 1988-1991 and rare tracks. Most notably was closer “You Made Me Realise”, which featured a six-minute noise section — an integral callback to the sonic intervals that could reach up to forty-five minutes at their early shows.

As the band got their bearings, it wasn’t entirely free from a few hiccups; the occasional false start or technical difficulties. But the audience was patient, and Shields simply shrugged it off, speaking coyly into the microphone: “It’s the age thing, you know?”

In a 2021 interview with The New York Times, it was revealed that the band had two new albums in the works following their signing with legendary indie label Domino Records, which would be their first new material since their 2013 album m b v.

The band conclude the UK leg of their reunion tour with tomorrow’s show in Glasgow, but are set to continue with four shows in Japan in February.
