Megan Thee Stallion scores early win in legal dispute with 1501 Certified Entertainment

A Texas judge has sided with Megan Thee Stallion, denying 1501 Certified Entertainment's request for a pre-trial ruling that Something for Thee Hotties doesn't qualify as an album under her contract with the label.

Rolling Stone reports that a Harris County judge denied the label's motion yesterday (28 December) for the pre-trial ruling, which was filed in mid-September and saw 1501 Certified Entertainment argue that the dispute shouldn't go to trial and the court should rule that Megan Thee Stallion's 2021 project Something For Thee Hotties isn't an album due to featuring previously released recordings. 1501's request also claimed Megan Thee Stallion didn't "follow the proper approval procedures."

Megan Thee Stallion responded to the label's motion on 19 December, stating she followed the terms of her contract fully and deserves the chance to go to trial. The response filing read: "[Megan] Pete should be allowed her day in court to present evidence and testimony to the jury demonstrating that she has done all that was required of her in the delivery and release of her albums."

The artist's response also stated that 300 Entertainment, the company that bought the exclusive right to manufacture, distribute and sell her albums in 2018, "kept 1501 apprised of developments" in the months leading up to the release of Something For Thee Hotties, and also provided the label a link to the project three days before its release. She also claims that 1501 "asserted no objection" until two months after the release.

Back in August Megan Thee Stallion filed an amended complaint seeking at least $1 million in damages from 1505. She also asked to be released from the "entirely one-sided" contract, claiming she fulfilled the requirements of her contract.
