'WALLPOETRY' set to take over Reykjavik as part of Iceland Airwaves
Urban Nations and Iceland Airwaves have joined together to announce 'WALLPOETRY', a collaboration between musicians and street artists taking place across Reykjavik.
Today they have announced the first wave of collaborations set to kick off the city-wide exhibition. Festival curator Henry M.Frimannsdottir and Director of Urban Nation Berlin, Yasha Young, invited musicians set to appear at this years festival to connect with a collection of international street artists.
Having been requested to write a particular piece of music, lyrics or poetry for the collaboration, the musicians and street artists were paired up and given a piece of wall for their art. Together they have transformed Rejkjavik's city walls into a landscape of canvases.
Frimannsdottir proclaimed that: "Iceland Airwaves is very excited about the project and can't wait to make Reykjavik even more beautiful. We loved the idea to combine these two art forms to make something really amazing and thought this was a great add on to the festival experience."
So far pairings have included:
Phlegm + Ylja
Li- Hill + John Grant
DEIH XLF + Vök
Ernest Zacharevic + Dikta
Telmomiel + Mercury Rev
Tankpetrol + GusGus
Elle + Úlfur Úlfur
DFace + Sagas
Axel Void + Shaun & Starr
Young explained the first edition of 'WALLPOETRY' as being "...dedicated to nurture the exchange and create opportunities between creative genres and cultures. It is amazing what and how much we learn about one another and a country when actually immersing into the culture for a full two weeks. The dialogues and ideas that emerge and the power and beauty of cultures working with one another is something we can learn from especially in today’s world."
This years line-up includes John Grant and The Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Hot Chip and many, many more. Iceland Airwaves takes place between 4-8 November in Reykjavik.
Battles, Beach House, GusGus, Porches., and Kiasmos are playing our stage on the Saturday night.
