UK vinyl sales pass five million for first time since 1990s
According to figures from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), over five million vinyl albums have been sold in the UK in 2021, the highest number since the 1990s.
This year saw an 8% increase on vinyl sales in 2020, topping five million for the first time since 1991, according to new figures from the BPI.
BBC reports that nearly a quarter (23%) of all albums bought in 2021 were on vinyl, with ABBA's comeback album Voyage topping the list.
Despite experiencing a vinyl shortage due to COVID, 2021 marked the 14th consecutive year of growth since 2007.
The Official Charts Company also reported that Voyage was the fastest-selling vinyl this century.
Adele's 30, Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, Ed Sheeran's = and Amy Winehouse's Back To Black are also among this year's predicted best-selling vinyl albums, while Olivia Rodrigo, Dave, Lana Del Rey, Queen and Coldplay are predicted to have the best-selling cassette's of the year.
