That new Smiths reunion has completely fallen apart
Mike Joyce has pulled out of the newly announced Classically Smiths shows, leaving the project's future in the balance.
UPDATE: The events have been cancelled. Joel Perry, a rep for production company Bad Production Ltd., tells Pitchfork: "In response to recent comments in the press, the planned Classically Smiths events will now no longer be taking place."
Original Post: Joyce, the band's originally drummer, has posted on Facebook that he won't be part of the (semi-)reunion. The shows - announced just yesterday - had already run into a bit of bother when bassist Andy Rourke revealed he wasn't actually ever involved.
Unsurprisingly, neither frontman Morrissey nor lead guitarist Johnny Marr were ever confirmed for the live shows, which had intended to join members of the seminal indie troupe with the Manchester Camerata Orchestra for an "epic production". Craig Gannon is ostensibly still on board.
"It is with much regret that I have to announce that I will not be taking part in the show(s) Classically Smiths," Joyce writes. "I entered into agreement in good faith to perform these shows with Andy Rourke and Craig Gannon. Unfortunately it became apparent very late that Andy would not be taking part... after much deliberation and soul searching I have decided that without Andy, an integral part of why I agreed to take part in the first place, I have come to this difficult decision."
