Tanya Tagaq recently won the Polaris Music Prize, beating off the likes of Arcade Fire and Drake, with her LP Animism.
An almost unclassifiable record, it draws from traditional folk and throat singing, avante-garde classical music, post-rock and experimental noise. The Bjork collaborator is politically charged, fighting for the rights of indiginous tribes and being harshly critical of many, including, quite vocally, PETA.
Listen to Tagaq's cover of Pixies' "Caribou" below.
Animism is out in the UK 26 January on Six Shooter.
