London's Printworks to close and be redeveloped into offices
London's iconic nightclub and events space Printworks will be officially closing down to be redeveloped into offices and shops.
The Rotherhithe raving hotspot will be shuttering for good according to Southwark News after Southwark council gave the green light to redevelopment plans. Printworks will be turned into offices and shops, despite a petition to save the space reaching over 10,000 signatures.
Printworks first opened in January 2017, and Southwark News reports that the 6,000-capacity venue was always intended to be temporary.
The piece reveals that council officers wrote in the report on Monday (11 July), "It is noted that a significant number of objections have been received in respect of the loss of the club/music venue currently operating on the site. It is acknowledged that this use has been very successful."
"However, the events use was initiated as a short term interim (meanwhile) use in 2016 pending development of the building within the masterplan," the report added. "It was never intended to be a permanent use of the site."
Back in March it was reported that Broadwick Live, the team behind Printworks, would be launching a new open-air venue in Silvertown Quays called Dockyards in September. The same team is also set to open another venue called The Beams in East London, which is expected to open in October.
